Maintaining a Healthy State of Mind
Being mentally healthy never fully depends on whether or not a person has mental illness or conditions. Having a truly healthy mind means viewing the world through a more positive filter, being confident, and having an overall good attitude about everything. These traits all add up to make a happy person and are key to good mental health and a good state of mind.
There are steps to take in order to keep mentally fit and maintain an ideal state of mind. Optimism plays an enormous role in this, along with realizing that everyone is surrounded with a circle of people that they can confide in and who care for them. Below are a few pointers on how to maintain a healthy, happy state of mind:
1. Think Happy!
Don't let the world bring you down. Learn how to cope with the negativity in your life and respond well to it. Try to turn the negatives into positives and make the best out of everything. As for things that are so obviously positive, enjoy them! Savor those little moments or those little things and take everything you can get out of them.
2. Be Grateful
Take a moment every once in a while to think of what you love, what you have, and what (or who) you are grateful for. You're a lucky person. Realizing this will get you focused on what you already have instead of what you wish you had. Not to mention it just makes you feel a million times better because -- let's face it -- we all have something to be grateful for.
3. Boost Your Own Self Esteem
Try new things, go out of your comfort zone. Find things you enjoy and do them. Make yourself feel good and let loose! In doing this, you can let go of your insecurities and concentrate on having a great time. Over time, your self esteem will grow immensely and, as an added bonus, you get to have fun.
4. You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile!
Simply just smiling can actually make you feel better, as proven by scientific research. Humans naturally smile when they feel happy or excited. Joy equates a smile and, in turn, a smile equates joy.
5. Spend Time With Animals
Animals heal the mind and soul; a cat with its purrs, a dog with its body heat. They have natural properties that are healing to humans and are so friendly and beautiful.
6. Find the Right Colors
Colors have been proven to affect people's emotions and behavior. They can steer you to be elated, livid, and anything in between. Look here for more information.
7. Never Doubt Yourself

You hold more power than you think. You have an impact on those around you and whatever your goals are, you can achieve them. Don't let anything bring you down from cloud 9.
8. Be Social

Humans are social animals, so keeping yourself isolated or cooped up will never help. Instead, interact! Find a time and place to be with your family, friends, significant other, or just to hit the town and have some fun.
9. Make Someone Else Feel Good
Help someone out, compliment their hair, walk an old lady across the street. Make someone else feel happy. This will put a smile on both of your faces and brighten two people's days.
10. Don't Be Afraid to Talk
It may be hard at times to open up, but it really helps to consult someone. Whether you're just having a bad day or you're dealing with an illness, talk to someone. Get everything off your chest and let it all out. Keeping in emotions and thoughts and secrets causes more stress, so just let it flow. Find someone you can trust and talk.
